Bye Bye Baby [21 months!}

As I sit here and type away, I am blown away by the little girl we just tucked into bed.  Little girl.  There hasn't been a ton of change in our cricket in the last month.  The only change I can see is that she is loosing all her baby looks and becoming more and more independent.  I can't look at her anymore and see very much baby left, it seems that the little baby girl I once held so perfectly in my arms now squirms all around in them trying to get comfy.  I find myself counting the days down to her second birthday...second birthday!!!  When did this happen?  Seriously I know it's an age old line...."they grow up so quick" but wow, watching this child grow has been pure joy and it's happened oh so fast!
At 21 months our girl is busy!  Busy like a worker bee!  She goes from sunup until sunset and will only stop for a brief refill of energy so she can keep on keeping on.  Since getting her kitchen for Christmas it's been fun to watch her imagination expand daily.  She's gone from just exploring the kitchen to now making extravagant meals or just playing house.  It's pretty darn cute!  She also loves her baby doll, "Baby" so very much.  She will carry her around the house, feed her a bottle or put her in her shopping basket and push her around the house.   She's a good little momma!
The cricket is talking constantly now.  Little jimmer jabber as I call it.  Nothing is secret from her either!  If she hears us talking about getting her ready for bed, she'll say NO or night night!  If she hears me talking about dinner she'll say eat.  She will now mimic anything someone asks her to say.  She was doing that last month but now it's a constant and of course I had to include a video of that!

What she wont do though is talk in public yet.  She is still very shy around people who are not constants in her life.  Another thing she's started this month is screaming.  Screaming realllllly loud!  It's pretty funny!  The cricket is also is all about saying who's mommy and who's daddy.  This last month has been very sweet watching her point to us in pictures and in a room of people.  She definitely knows who her parents and siblings are and be sure to will tell you.  I've also heard her doing her cricket sounds a lot this last month and it takes me back to those first days in China with her when that was all she'd do...just clicking away.  Whenever I hear her doing it now I stop what I'm doing and just listen.  It makes me tear up every time.  I really need to capture it on video but she does it at really odd times...like in the grocery store, while we're driving or in the bath tub.
As for food likes, she's still all over the place and keeps me on my toes trying to find stuff for her to eat now.  She is all about noodles and will never pass them up.  All protein is still a yuck for her as is most veggies.  I did introduce broccoli and humus to her diet this last month and she loves them!  If you got any ideas for getting those veggies and proteins in, I'd love to hear!!  This is a new thing for me since Big J ate the world when he was little.  We've also seemed to have phased out the mid day bottle and are slowly phasing out the sippy cup which she's happy about as she'd much rather use a big girl cup instead!  Right now she's wearing 18 to 24 month clothing but starting to grow out of them and I'm getting ready to pull out the next box of stored 24 months to 2T!

This last month has flown by and now our girl is 21 months old!  Like I said, not a lot of change but the little changes that have happened are pretty astounding!  I still look at this child everyday and find myself in awe that she is mine and that God has so richly blessed us with her joyful spirit.  There are moments even now that I just hold her and think someone is going to come to the door and say, "okay times up, you've been awesome.  Thanks!".  And then I remind myself that no one is going to ever take this away from me!  In fact we had our final post placement visit last week and we can officially say that we are done with anything having to do with home studies, agencies and the government..............for awhile!

Twenty!

It's hard to imagine that my girl is 20 months old today!  HOLY COW!!  The baby in her is almost gone it seems and all that's left is the fact that she still takes a bottle in the morning, at nap and at bedtime and this momma has no problems with that.  It's those 15 minutes of her sitting in my arms snuggled to my chest that a treasure most right now.  It's when I can smell the top of her head and breathe in her sweet scent.  Or when I can just sit for a few minutes and pray over her and for us.  Thank you Lord!
On top of the fact that she is growing taller by the second which is verified by the fact that she can no longer run under the fridge door when it's open.  The poor thing has discovered that fact by smacking into it and being stopped abruptly!  Now she checks when she gets close and gets real low to go under it.
She also not eating like she used to, so I guess she's having real issues with that fridge!  ;)  As for food she no longer likes fish. AT. ALL.  Chicken is not a winner nor is pork.  Beef though is still a fav but unfortunately for her we don't eat it too often, maybe that's why she inhales it when it's on the table.  Veggies have suddenly become something out of a horror flick and she wont come near them unless it's a tomato or a frozen pea.  Now bread products, cheese, noodles and soup are considered the best thing since apple pie!

This last month she has discovered that books hold more than just a way to build a step to get to something up high.  Before this she has not wanted to sit and read a book for more than a few seconds, now though she will bring PILES of books to our laps to read them over and over and over again.  I looooovvvveee this!  She has three very obvious favorites, (besides the holiday ones right now) Goodnight Moon is beyond joy for her and we have to find that mouse on each page!  She adores Baby Honu's Incredible Journey and puts it to bed with her.  Motherbridge of Love was brought out last month and it's never far from sight.  She is entranced by it.  She studies the pictures.  We talk about it constantly.  It is a treasure in our world already.  I am so glad to see an interest in books finally because I LOVE to read and I've been looking forward to passing on that passion to her!

Her language skills are beginning to snowball and we are all waiting for the day she just spews out something in understandable sentences.  She has started stringing words together more and more and is using less sign language and using the spoken word now instead.  She said her name clearly for the first time this last Tuesday night.  She is starting to mimic us and laughs when she does it.  She said I love you after I said it to her and I was a puddle.  She understands everything we say to her and wants SO badly to respond back with more than just yes or no.  She is still very quiet around strangers and has just started to say hello and goodbye to the folks at the small grocery store we shop at.  She is a singer just like me...ummm wonder where she learned that from!  We hum and lalalala our way through stores and quite often get a giggle or two from people but I could care less!  We love to sing and there's nothing wrong with that!
She is one hundred percent a daddies girl.  This last month has been a challenge for me and something new for me to understand.  As a single mom of a little boy, I was his world for a very long time.  I never had to share him and he never had to share me.  Now that's all changed in this instance...a good change! :)  But one I must understand and get used to.  The cricket has been through so much in her little life and has had one too many women walk away from her never to return and this last month it seems she has been testing me to see if I will also leave and never come back to her.  After conversing with a friend (thank you Sandy!), I've come to understand this better and know that it's a test and I'm gonna win this one for sure.  My girl and I are still getting to know each other...it's a process of patience, love and understanding on both parts.  I've got it all and will continuously work at it but she is still a little leery of the (lasting) love part.  Until then I am patient in giving her the love I know she needs and am thankful she is so close with her daddy.

Sleep is still a major issue and I suspect it to be that way for a very long time.  We spent the last month doing the Ferber method, (fry me if you wish but you're not in my shoes so keep it nice!) and we've had to go back to the drawing board.   We did make some progress while doing the Ferber method but after five weeks we were still no better than we were when we started, although we haven't had nights on end with no sleep since starting it and that is a good thing.  We are still up every night two to four times but it is easy to get her back down now, thank goodness!  There is no terror during these awake times, just the need to have someone there.  Someday we will have consistent sleep, until then my coffee pot is always brewing!
As we begin to make that stretch towards the wonderful age of two, I've seen more and more independence bubble up.  We bought a potty....as you can see from above!  She has been very interested in what goes on in the bathroom and I just thought it was time to introduce the potty.  So far she hasn't "used" it but she sits on it every time I use the little girls room.  Little Miss is very vocal about when she wants something and when she doesn't.  She is very clear that animal print pants are not to be worn...ever.  There are days when she wants a bow in her hair and there are a lot of days when she says, "NO bow!".  If her favorite cartoon is on she'll be happy to enjoy it on the couch three feet from you and don't bother trying to get her to snuggle with you to watch it but don't leave!  After every meal she must re-buckle her high chair snaps and no help please!  Thank you very much!  She would much rather feed herself or feed you before she'll let you feed her.   If she could drive now, she would.

It seems that so much has changed in her in the last month and I look forward to each morning to see what new thing will happen in the day.  Each day is a mystery!  She has now become very aware of her body and where everything is located on hers and other bodies too.  She knows all the parts and can tell you where the dogs nose and ears are too.  Last week I taught her how to nose kiss and she is all about doing that now and just smiles brightly when she gives or receives.  During the photo shoot from below she was enthralled with seeing her belly button in the mirror and seeing herself pointing to her eyes, ears...etc....Good stuff!!

The month ahead is sure to be filled with more change and I'm more than thrilled to be witness of it all!  I expect to hear more and more words come out of her sweet lips and maybe start pulling out the 24 month box of clothes, we're in 12-18 months with a few 6-12s and 18-24s thrown in for good measure.  The one thing I am looking forward to right now is what is to happen next weekend!  Like I've been saying lately...Chirstmas is a gift this year!  Oooo and you know I can't close this out without one more video....loving my Flip still!!  This is one way for me to finish up with dinner and keep little cricket from having a complete meltdown before dinner is served...I so wish we'd never gotten rid of our piano!!!

And so it began...With an update...

Today I remember 365 days in the past...

I was completely unprepared for the call the way I'd wanted to be.  I didn't think referrals would be in the States yet, at least not until tomorrow.  I went to work that morning with butterflies fluttering about in my belly.  I worked at my clients house like a robot.  I was emotionally numb from the roller coaster ride we'd been on since October.  I was SURE if we did get a call it would be to say we didn't get a referral because we got turned down at the 11th hour.  I called my mom that morning and told her not to come by to wait for the call, I said, "maybe tomorrow".  My husband went to San Francisco that day for a meeting.  I came home from work and was a dirty mess, unshowered and sloppy looking.  I had no video camera set up, yet my paper full of questions was on a nearby table.  I was in a fog.  I was planning on coming home from work and cleaning my own house after the birthday party from the night before.

Then there was a knock on my door.  It was my oldest sister standing there with a smile and a huge hug.  She said, "today's the day!"  I replied, "I don't think so and besides I told mom not to come and Mike's not here, calls haven't started in Europe and look at me, I'm a mess!  Tomorrow's the day!"  She was adamant that today was the day and said after stalking RQ for the last four months she was 100% sure the phone would ring.  We sat and talked for what seemed like hours.  The entire time she was keeping me focused on other thoughts and we checked in every so often with RQ...nothing.  We looked at blogs of other referrals from the past.  We shared dreams.  She held my hand when I fretted and kept filling me up with warm tea.

UPDATED Picture....(My sister took this on our referral day and sent it to me today. I had no idea there was a picture snapped in those moments.  I SO treasure this little piece of that incredible day!)
Then the phone rang and we both froze.  It rang almost 5 times before I could answer it.  I looked at her and started crying and told her to find a video camera because Mike was going to miss this entire thing and she said, "there's no time"!  I said, "what if they're just going to tell me we didn't get matched?"  She screamed...."ANSWER THE PHONE!"  And I did.

On the other end of the line was a voice that told me who was calling and said, "Congratulations! Kayce you have a baby girl and that's all the information I have for you right now so don't ask any questions and I'll email you her information within an hour."  Gulp.  Tears.  Gulp.  Tears.  Shaking.  Gulp.

I remember my sisters arms around me and there were words spoken but I don't remember who was talking or what was being said.  The room was spinning and it felt as though we were having an earthquake.  At least 15 minutes passed before I caught my breath long enough to say I should call Mike and tell him he's a daddy again.  I got his voicemail and later found out he listened to that message on a street just shy of Chinatown and cried and listened to the message again.  He later told me he was so excited he accidently erased the message instead of saving it for eternity.  He made it home that day from The City in record time.  I managed to call our families to tell them the news.  There was pure shock all around.  And not 20 minutes after that beautiful call, my email chimed that I had a new message and there she was.  But I waited almost 3 hours before I opened it.  My sister pushed me into the shower and swore she'd not peek at that email!  I had to pick Big J up from school that day and was a shaking, smiling mess of joy to tell him the news.  He wanted to know all the details but I said we had to wait for Mike to get home before we could open that email.  We pulled in the driveway 30 minutes later and there was my husbands truck.

Five minutes later this is what we saw...

And here is our reaction:

It's been 365 days since I first saw this beautiful face.  Since I fell in love with those soulful eyes.  Since I touched every part of her face even before I held her in my arms.  Since I was given a gift from God. 365 days of staring at those pictures which I treasure so very much!  It seems like yesterday.   And now we begin the walk into another 365 days filled with hope, preparation,  answered prayers, celebrations, first moments together, beginning a new life, and a newfound joy.

I love you my sweet, sweet girl!  I love you!  Today is a day I will never forget.  One that fills my heart with love and pride of who you are and what you mean to me.  I treasure you like the stars in the night sky and will always be by your side where ever you are.

Fore!

On Monday my little cricket and I got to spend the afternoon with my grandma, the crickets great-grandma whom we call grandma-grandma.  Before we came home from China I used to spend one day a week with my most treasured family member playing cards and just talking, now I'm lucky if I can get one hour a month with my grandma!  This woman is my hero and I cherish the time I get to spend with her.  After raising seven beautiful children, (my mom being the oldest and the only girl!) I love to listen to my grandma's wisdom and her wit.
This particular day we enjoyed the grounds of the property grandma-grandma lives at and found ourselves a little putting green to practice our golf game.  Little miss was in golf ball heaven and enjoyed every minute of the attention she was capturing!  And no I didn't plan that they both wore pink but oh they were the perfect match for some pics!
Yes, I posted this one again because I just love it so much.  The girls are looking at "Luna" the dog that was out for a walk.
PS...can you tell I'm trying to figure out how to do a watermark...I'm not doing it right yet obviously!  I'll get it...someday!

Even though our afternoon was quick and no one won at cut throat rummy, we had so much fun and the cricket was a ham.   I have to make a point to get back to my days with my grandma and get over the fact that our card games may have to wait for a few years or at least until we can teach lil' miss to hold cards.   Until then I think we'll just enjoy our visits and see what kind of trouble we can get into at "the home" as I lovingly call it.  ;o  Love you Grandma!

Sunshine and smiles

The last few days have been beautiful fall days here on the coast and of course we've been taking full advantage of the outdoors!

On Wednesday I took the little cricket down to the beach right before sunset to get our sillies out and enjoy a little mommy/daughter time.
Our little walks along the shore are always filled with some adventure and of course lots of perfect moments...right before I snapped this shot my girl grabbed my hand and kissed it and looked at me and smiled....my heart just melted right there.
Thursday I loaded up our bikes, packed a big picnic lunch and piled my sweets in the car early in the morning for a bike ride to the aquarium.  We had a fantastic time and completely lost track of time and space!  Our few hours turned into an all day adventure and we found ourselves peddling fast to get back to the car and get home to get dinner in us before Big J's bible study started.   It was worth every ounce of sweat that poured off me as I road up that big hill to get back!
Oh goodness I LOVED this picture but is there an action out there to make eyes open!? :)

There is this sweet spot at the aquarium where the light is perfect and I've been spying it for awhile to shoot some pictures there and ohhhh I wasn't disappointed!  My ever handy model did a great job of dealing with a crowd around him and was eager to let me practice.  :)

Then of course I tried to capture my toddler which was just about pointless!
I had visions of her perfectly saying cheese in this small brick alley way there,
but no she wanted to turn all the valves and ring the bell.
She still gave me the perfect cheese though.

Thanks to my babes for letting me get all mamarazzi on you and for a perfectly wonderful day!
I adore you!

Pumpkin and apple pies!

Recently little miss and I got to spend an afternoon with our friends, Miss Z and her mommy, at one of our favorite farms.  Although all the apples had been picked already and the season was done for the year, we still had a ball playing in the orchard and moving hay around in the pumpkin patch.  It is such a joy to watch these two play together and see the fun they get into.

Today our little cricket is 18 months old!

The start of life on the constant move.
The beginning of understanding boundaries and interactions with others.
The realization that the world is yours!

I love this age and all that comes with it and it only gets better and better from here on out, well at least until the teen years!  We've had so much going on these last few months and our little miss is growing like a weed!  It seems as though we no longer have a wee baby anymore but a toddler all of the sudden and oh is it sad to say goodbye to all things baby!   Our home scale says she now weighs 23 pounds but I'm not too sure of that because last time I did it was 3 pounds more than at the doctors...so we'll say somewhere between 20 and 23.  :)  She's 32 inches tall now from what my yard stick tells me but we'll get more definite measurements at her 18 month check up in a few weeks.  Hopefully she'll let the doctor come near her this time since at the last appointment she screamed and kicked the entire time that our poor pediatrician just said well she looks and sounds great!

With each new day our crickets vocabulary grows and grows!  She is now babbling non stop at home and is moving on from whining for something to using words or sign language.  She says: up, mommy, more (that's her favorite word), no, night-night, yup, daddy, and this.  We've also been working on "GO Giants" and she's almost got it down!  Maybe by the World Series (I'm hopeful!) she'll be saying it where others can understand.  :)  Besides being a chatterbox at home, she's also quite opinionated about lots of things!  She will not let me wash her blanket at all.  She is completely opposed to wearing anything animal print.  If we ask her if she wants to do something she'll either say no with a firm head shake or say more please in sign language...pretty cute stuff!
Recently she has started laughing at things she finds funny and it's a crack up!  She'll be sitting watching her favorite show, Sesame Street, and just start busting up!  She'll also play with the dogs and just sit and laugh up a storm with them.  At moments like that I stop what ever I'm doing and just sit and listen to that sweet sound.  :)  Laughter never gets old!

In the last update little miss hadn't begun walking yet....well that's changed!  She is walking non stop and at greater speeds every day!  It's been such a blessing to watch and has made worries I had be stomped away and the dragging of her leg is completely gone!  A few days ago she started crawling towards me on the floor then she stopped and looked down and you could just see her mind wondering what she was doing so she quickly jumped up and took off like a wild child!  Good stuff for the momma soul!

We are now completely gone of anything baby food like and eating everything that the big people in the house eat.  She's discovered brownies recently and thought those were pretty darn good along with eating applesauce, oatmeal and yogurt all on her own.   We've added a few things to the favorite list....oatmeal, string cheese, prunes and sausage, oh and brownies!  She's got almost all of her baby teeth in except for the eye teeth on the top and bottom and showed now signs of teething issues through all of those molars coming in.  I'll never forget when poor Big J teethed and I've been prepared for the same horrible issues this go round but the cricket has been a teething champ!
Once you go from babyhood to full force toddler comes the willingness to help and my girl is all helper all the time!  She helps move the wet laundry to the dryer and shuts the door and pushes the buttons to start the cycles.  She helps me mow the lawn and pull weeds (which is my favorite job of hers) now we'll have to see how long she's willing to do that!!  She helps me unload the dishwasher or help me make dinner.  She is always willing to help me with putting the groceries in the basket or on the conveyer  belt at check out.  She's a helper!  :)  As you can see in the shot below, we still do a lot of ergo time which I just love.  There are days when it's just something we both want and need and neither of us ever complains about those hours of closeness no matter what we're doing at the time.

Baby girl it's hard to believe you're a year and a half old now!  It seems like yesterday that you were just this little thing in my arms and now you're just wrapped around my legs and so full of life it makes me overflow with joy.  You are the sunshine in our lives and our constant entertainment which makes for never a dull moment around here!  I love how each day a new discovery is made in your world and you will mull that discovery around and around until you master it.  Your laughter at new things is contagious  and always makes me stop to capture a laugh myself.  I am so blessed to be your mommy and to experience all that God has planned for you.  SO blessed!  I love you my sweet girl!

Black and White Wednesday - Pieces lost

I can not take credit for this capture for I do not know who held the camera in their hands and pushed the button to bring light to the film and forever capture this moment.  Maybe it was another nanny or an orphanage worker?  Maybe it was this woman's husband?  Or could it have been a friend?  I will never know but I am SO grateful to whom ever took these pictures for us.  This picture is framed in my home today and is looked at by me at least 10 times a day and there is never a second when I don't smile and feel forever grateful and beyond blessed.

There are days too when I pick up this framed shot and stare at the details surrounding my daughters face.  I search her eyes for a reflection.  I look for clues in the trash along the road.  I search the windows behind her for a face or a flash of movement.  I examine each thread on her tiny body as well as the details of her nanny.  I look at the signs on the brick wall and try to decipher what they say.   I stare and stare at that picture.

Those are the days when I miss what this beautiful woman in the picture got for the first nine months of my daughters life.  Those moments seem lost to me because I can not verbally share those firsts with my daughter and while it saddens me for a minute, I am reminded that those moments are not completely lost to us.  They are not lost because we have a handful of photos that share the intense love that this woman had for my sweet girl.

In each and every shot our mystery photographer took, she captured a woman who is filled with the same awe that I am overcome with, that same love and admiration for this child.  For that is definitely shared by us.  Once I place the frame back in it's space I always say a little prayer for a woman whom I hope to meet someday and I pray that she has peace knowing that this child is so very loved by me.

Be sure to head over to Lisa's blog and pass on well wishes to her as she is days from embarking on her journey of love to bring home her daughter!  Bon Voyage Lisa!  You and Reagan are in our prayers!

Our first tea

My sweet girl and I shared our first tea together a few weeks back...
We enjoyed every drop of our pretend tea and tea sandwiches with quiet enthusiasm.  It was fun to watch my girl do exactly what you have to do with your cup and plate and pour the tea just right.  She loved to stir in the milk and sugar and wipe her mouth when she was all done.  I can not wait to do this again and again and again and again as the years go by in our lives together.  And most of all I can't wait to share a cup of tea with her in a small town in China someday when we return.
I bought this tea set four plus years ago in anticipation of this day...it was so worth every second!

Love how He works!

This story started well over a year ago and went something like this....

Once upon a time in China lived two beautiful little girls who spent their days together in an orphanage in a small village.  Then one day one of the little girls left the orphanage to go to her forever home with her mommy and daddy.   A few months later the other little girl also left the orphanage and went to her forever home with her new mommy, daddy and big brother.  Life was suddenly new for both of them.
Many months passed and life became a blur of new experiences all with a new beautiful life filled with so much love and joy.  Then one of the beautiful little girls moved to a new home in a new town with her mommy and daddy and was so excited to live in a beautiful new place!
Then an amazing discovery was made!  The little girl and her family had moved to the same town as one of her orphanage sisters!   Such an amazing thing!  And SO very exciting!
To have come from the same little tiny village in a far away land, then to be in their forever homes with their families is a miracle in itself, but now to be able to see each other again and build a beautiful friendship is such a gift!  The two beautiful girls have been having so much fun "reconnecting" and sharing their new lives together and plan to live happily ever after!
Not quite the end.  :)

The last few weeks have been so much fun doing play dates with Zoey and her mommy and introducing then to some of our favorite play spots.  Our little cricket just loves watching Z run around and tries to do what she does and tries so hard to say Zoey.  The girls are a little over a month a part and are just a kick to watch play together.  Now capturing them both on film looking at the camera or standing still is another story!  All Miss J and I know is that we're pretty happy to have one of our YiYang families so close!  I love God's plans and how they unfold before us!

All make believe and play

Imagination is the key to a life full of adventure!  That's my thought at least and I'm sticking with it.  :)
As a child I had a beautiful playhouse that I spent many hours in, cooking, playing, dreaming and just being in my own "big girl" space.  I loved it and treasure those memories so much.  Thanks dad!

When we knew we would be adopting a little girl my mind became full of all things make believe and dreamed of having a daughter who would find trunks full of dress-up clothes, a purse or a playhouse the best thing since apple pie.  I haven't been disappointed only amazed because this little girl is nothing but a girly play and make believer!  With this in mind our little crickets daddy spent a few weekends building his girl a home of her own complete with electricity, a dutch door and a porch to relax on.  It's a beautiful replica of our own home!

Last weekend Miss J hosted a little housewarming party to show off her daddy's hard work and to share her dream house to everyone.  Her grandma came with gifts in tow...
...her very own le Creuset cookware and "Jenny Air" stove top!  :)
Here is our cricket showing her other grandma the chalkboard inside and of course the hor d'oeurves!
Her first party was a huge success!  She loved showing everyone all the little things like her mailbox and the light switches that she is very serious about turning off and on.
Now our little cricket wants to do nothing but play in her house.  We've had many a fabulous meal already!  Oh and did I mention that she has to have a purse where ever she goes now.
Every. Where. We. Go!
