And so it began...With an update...

Today I remember 365 days in the past...

I was completely unprepared for the call the way I'd wanted to be.  I didn't think referrals would be in the States yet, at least not until tomorrow.  I went to work that morning with butterflies fluttering about in my belly.  I worked at my clients house like a robot.  I was emotionally numb from the roller coaster ride we'd been on since October.  I was SURE if we did get a call it would be to say we didn't get a referral because we got turned down at the 11th hour.  I called my mom that morning and told her not to come by to wait for the call, I said, "maybe tomorrow".  My husband went to San Francisco that day for a meeting.  I came home from work and was a dirty mess, unshowered and sloppy looking.  I had no video camera set up, yet my paper full of questions was on a nearby table.  I was in a fog.  I was planning on coming home from work and cleaning my own house after the birthday party from the night before.

Then there was a knock on my door.  It was my oldest sister standing there with a smile and a huge hug.  She said, "today's the day!"  I replied, "I don't think so and besides I told mom not to come and Mike's not here, calls haven't started in Europe and look at me, I'm a mess!  Tomorrow's the day!"  She was adamant that today was the day and said after stalking RQ for the last four months she was 100% sure the phone would ring.  We sat and talked for what seemed like hours.  The entire time she was keeping me focused on other thoughts and we checked in every so often with RQ...nothing.  We looked at blogs of other referrals from the past.  We shared dreams.  She held my hand when I fretted and kept filling me up with warm tea.

UPDATED Picture....(My sister took this on our referral day and sent it to me today. I had no idea there was a picture snapped in those moments.  I SO treasure this little piece of that incredible day!)
Then the phone rang and we both froze.  It rang almost 5 times before I could answer it.  I looked at her and started crying and told her to find a video camera because Mike was going to miss this entire thing and she said, "there's no time"!  I said, "what if they're just going to tell me we didn't get matched?"  She screamed...."ANSWER THE PHONE!"  And I did.

On the other end of the line was a voice that told me who was calling and said, "Congratulations! Kayce you have a baby girl and that's all the information I have for you right now so don't ask any questions and I'll email you her information within an hour."  Gulp.  Tears.  Gulp.  Tears.  Shaking.  Gulp.

I remember my sisters arms around me and there were words spoken but I don't remember who was talking or what was being said.  The room was spinning and it felt as though we were having an earthquake.  At least 15 minutes passed before I caught my breath long enough to say I should call Mike and tell him he's a daddy again.  I got his voicemail and later found out he listened to that message on a street just shy of Chinatown and cried and listened to the message again.  He later told me he was so excited he accidently erased the message instead of saving it for eternity.  He made it home that day from The City in record time.  I managed to call our families to tell them the news.  There was pure shock all around.  And not 20 minutes after that beautiful call, my email chimed that I had a new message and there she was.  But I waited almost 3 hours before I opened it.  My sister pushed me into the shower and swore she'd not peek at that email!  I had to pick Big J up from school that day and was a shaking, smiling mess of joy to tell him the news.  He wanted to know all the details but I said we had to wait for Mike to get home before we could open that email.  We pulled in the driveway 30 minutes later and there was my husbands truck.

Five minutes later this is what we saw...

And here is our reaction:

It's been 365 days since I first saw this beautiful face.  Since I fell in love with those soulful eyes.  Since I touched every part of her face even before I held her in my arms.  Since I was given a gift from God. 365 days of staring at those pictures which I treasure so very much!  It seems like yesterday.   And now we begin the walk into another 365 days filled with hope, preparation,  answered prayers, celebrations, first moments together, beginning a new life, and a newfound joy.

I love you my sweet, sweet girl!  I love you!  Today is a day I will never forget.  One that fills my heart with love and pride of who you are and what you mean to me.  I treasure you like the stars in the night sky and will always be by your side where ever you are.

Black and White Wednesday - Adoption changed me

A sweet moment captured by Big J in San Francisco.  Processed with Nelly  Nero's Cynic B/W
As our car sped along the open road with the beautiful Pacific Ocean on our left and the sun on our faces, a conversation was taking place in the car.  Voices full of ideas.  Tones filled with wonderment.  A long forgotten tune playing in the background.  Sparks of excitement exploding all over.  The day was July 25, 2005.  I can almost remember each moment of that six hour drive home from Southern California up highway 101.

We had just spent the weekend with our best friends celebrating their twins firsts birthday.  The weekend was packed full with getting ready for the celebration and the pitter patter of small feet all around me.  Much of the conversation was about the joy of children in our lives and how each and every one is such a gift from God, especially the twins who were IVF babies...miracles.  My soul was craving another child then.  My body could not give me that child.  Little did I know at the time that adoption could and even would.

Having a child for me was never something I thought I could do.  As a child I was diagnosed with Type I diabetes and was told I would most likely never conceive.  Then I had my son.  My world changed with one heartbeat and after that I wanted to fill my arms with as many children as I could hold.   Several years after the birth of my first child I had to have a total hysterectomy and thought I had lost my chance to fill my arms again and again.  My husband and I would never share a child of our own.  I learned to accept it.  Kind of.    In my soul I ached for another.  Adoption soon filled my heart until it burst on that drive home from a first birthday.

In those six hours that it took us to get home we had gone from one end of the adoption spectrum to the other.  Tears were shed.  Laughter was heard.  Countries were mentioned.  Money was discussed.  Names were thrown out there.  Concrete was poured and our hearts were firmly incased in the fact that we were going to be parents again.  We were going to get the chance to share something together.  We were going to adopt.  When we walked in the door, I ran straight for the computer and the phone.  I called my best friend to tell her she was always right about how another child would grace our family.  I frantically started researching agencies and for the first time couldn't wait for Monday to get here so I could make calls!

I'm a go in and get it done kinda person.  This is what I want and this is how to do it...get it, got it...good!  Not so much with adoption.  Adoption is not for the faint hearted nor a person of little faith.  This was not something I was completely prepared for when we started this journey.  We began our adoption with Russia and got turned down due to my diabetes.  It was a pretty sad day for me. Once again I felt betrayed by my health.  Then China spoke to us again.  And again.  And again.  It had from the beginning.  The next week we turned in our application for China and started the race.
Mike captured this moment on our beach a few months back.  Processed with Nelly Nero's Classic B/W with a few tweaks.
As we all know the journey of love in route to China is quite a bumpy one.  There are road blocks every few miles and lots of floods to swim through.  When our dossier went across the ocean and landed on a desk in China we were told it would be 6-9 months to wait for our child.  Those months turned into a path I never saw coming.  This path changed me to the core.  And to be honest right now...I'm glad.  In those 45 months I learned to accept the things I can not change and make lemonade with what's leftover.  I found a deeper love for myself and I found a much deeper relationship with God.

Adoption is beautiful.  Adoption is hard, almost ugly sometimes.  Adoption is an incredible joy.  Adoption is raw.  Adoption is perfect and completely imperfect at the same time.  Adoption blesses two entities.  Adoption is not something you can prepare for.  Adoption can deplete your wallet yet give you riches beyond measure.  Adoption is a gift from God.

Adoption not only changed my family it changed my life and it will change me again because my arms have plenty of room and my heart is firmly in the concrete I call the miracle of adoption.
Happy Black and White Wednesday everyone!  Our entire family hopes your kickoff to the holidays is filled with all the blessings you've prayed about all year long!  Happy Thanksgiving to all!

Black and White Wednesday - 19 ways I love you so

Today my sweet girl you are nineteen months old.  Time is moving rapidly forward and I treasure each and every minute I have to watch you grow and explore in your world.  I find it amazing that nine months has passed since I first held you in my arms and you've gone from a tiny eleven pound bundle to a beautiful 22.2 pound and 31 inch long toddler!  On this black and white Wednesday I give you nineteen things I love about you today!

~ My love overflows for you when you come up to me and give my leg a hug and say mama.  Melt!

~ I love the way you wake in the morning...you stretch and make little noises before you gather your books and babies and quietly read to them before you call for mommy or daddy to come get you.  I always sit and listen to you on the monitor and just smile and thank God for another beautiful day.

~ I love how you pretend to be a puppy!  You crawl around and roll on your back just like Ella then you run over to the dog pillows and try to snuggle up with your Summit or Ella.

~ I love the way you grab any kind of bag with handles and make it your purse for the hour.

~ The way you enjoy your morning cartoon which is Little Einstein's, just makes me laugh with love!  You follow along so well with your clapping and lifting your arms and your curtain call is the best!

~ I love how you always strap yourself to me like a baby monkey when a stranger talks to us and you burry your head in my arms after you give your little unsure glare.

~ I love how you have bonded with the special people in your life like your
grandparents, aunts, uncles and your great grandma.
~ The way your entire face lights up when you laugh is pure love and joy to me!

~ I love your sing song voice and all of the words that come singing out of your mouth.  Right now your most favorite is "no" and you say it at least 100 times a day as well as your new word "okie dokie".
I could listen to you chatter all day long.

~ I absolutely LOVE how you try to do everything I do from cooking dinner, brushing your hair or snapping pictures.
You are most definitely my mini me!
~ I love that I get to be your mommy through adoption and that we get to share that with those who ask.

~ I love your adventuresome spirit!
You are willing to give just about anything a try as long as mommy, daddy or big brother is near by.
~ I love how you give "the glare" to those who you do not know.  People always laugh at your mean little look, but I know that it is your concern with strangers.  The funny thing is though, is that when we walk away you always say good bye and wave or blow a kiss and that stranger never sees it.

~ I love our Monday's!  We spend the entire day just you and me doing chores, grocery shopping, picking up after the weekend and sometimes a sweet nap together.  It's our day.

~ I love how you let me play with your hair and how you let me style it up!  I can't wait for the days when you are brushing my hair for hours and adding all kinds of bows to it!
~ I love that you are starting to string words together like, "more please" and "thank you" or "here mama" and that you are starting to count and point to things we ask you about like your nose or your toes.

~ I love that you love music as much as me and that you think dancing is the next best thing besides your favorite pink blanket.  The way you swing your head is too adorable!

~ I love our mornings cuddled up in our favorite chair each with our morning cup of joe.
We watch the sun come up through the trees and enjoy a few minutes of silence together.
~ I love that tomorrow you will have been in my arms longer than you haven't.
The days that lie ahead are ones I long to remember and will cherish forever!
The days that have past us already are treasures to me.
I love you my sweet princess and I am SO very lucky to have you in my life and
to have been blessed by the miracle of adopting you!
...love mommie.

Happy Wednesday!

Black and White Wednesday - Building Family

Bless this family brought together by Your goodness.
Watch over this home.
Guard those who dwell within.
Let their paths which started apart blend together
into one road lightened by your Love.
Help this family who adopted each other to dwell together in joy.
Keep ever kindled the warmth of their loving home.
~Mary Tobin (San Francisco Examiner 1962-1977)

When asked why we wanted to adopt my answer is always the same..."because we wanted to add more to our family and this is the way we want to grow."  There is nothing more in life that makes me happier than to be surrounded by family and to give that to a child is priceless.
Biological, step, adopted or whatever...family is everything in life.

This picture is a moment that was captured where we were all just staring at this new joy in home, in fact this picture is pretty much what life is like around here...we just sit and stare with huge smiles on our faces at our daughter, our sister, our grand daughter, our cousin.  The adoption of our little cricket has changed every person in each our families in ways none of us knew could happen.  Life has taken on a new hue you could say and yes it can happen when a biological child is brought into a family, but a child brought into a family through adoption is life changing in a very positive way.  At least for our family.

Many have asked us since our family has grown if we will do it again...of course it's asked with slight hesitation because all know of our trails and tribulations of the wait.  The answer, is a resounding yes.  Tomorrow, yesterday, next week, next month, last month...yes, yes, yes.  And the reaction is always the same..."you'd go through that wait again!!??  Are you nuts!"  For our cricket, yes in a heartbeat! but for our next family member God has different plans for us and we will wait for His timing to bring us together.   Whether our next wait is months or years, we know there is a very special child who longs for a family just as much as our family longs to bring him or her home.  I look forward to the day!

Scripture & A Snapshot {Finding the Strength to Rest in His Arms}

Sometimes I find myself staring at this picture which hangs framed on my living room wall.
My husband captured this moment during a sunny afternoon while camping in Oregon last summer.
I gaze at it in utter awe.  After nine months of cradling this child of God in my arms I am still amazed that He actually answered my prayers and so richly blessed our lives.
I'm also humbled by His Grace.

I think back to the year prior to this photo and almost cry to think we were so close to walking away from this adoption.  After almost three years of waiting and longing to have our prayers answered, the emotional ups and downs of the wait, the questions of uncertainty, and the lack of patience to go any further, we were ready to walk away.  We spent weeks questioning ourselves.  We argued over who was going to call our agency.  We cried in pain at a loss we'd never even held.

Then one day I was sitting in my car in my driveway numb and so confused over what to do.   A song started playing on my iPod, "Show Me What I'm Looking For"  by Carolina Liar.  As the tears began to flow so did the answer inside me.  Let go and let God.  I'd always tried to control the adoption myself, yes I prayed about it but I never fully gave it to God.  That day I did.  My husband and I talked that night about our decision....walk away or give it to Him and wait to see no matter how much longer our wait would be.

We walked the remainder of our wait with the strength knowing that this adoption was in His hands.
The inner peace that came with that knowledge was overpowering and life changing.

This is my first submission for Scripture and a Snapshot and while I knew exactly what scripture and picture I would use this week, I'm looking forward to the challenge of what I can come up with for next week!

Black and White Wednesday - First moment

With November being Adoption Awareness Month, I will be dedicating my Black and White Wednesdays throughout November sharing how adoption has impacted our lives and the moments that have made life so much more incredible.  You can read more about different adoption awareness activities here or learn more about adoption here.  Adoption is one of the most beautiful things to experience whether it's you, a loved one or a your neighbor.

Nothing can prepare you for that first moment when you first look at each other eye to eye just as my daughter and I are doing in the picture below.  The wait wont prepare you.  Your heart can't prepare you.  There are no words to prepare you.  There is absolutely nothing at all.  For me it was an intense few minutes where I felt I was the only person in a room that was filled with people and loud, loud noise everywhere.  I heard and saw nothing except this child in front of me.  I could smell her sweet scent as soon as she was handed to me.  We stared at each other.  Absorbing.  Each scared.  Each unsure.  Me overflowing with love.  Her scared to accept it.

On the Eighth Day
10:15 am Heaven Time

"God," said the angel.  "What are you doing?"
"I'm creating a woman."
"You made a female last week!"
"This female is a newer model.
Unlike model A,this one will not be able
to reproduce in her own likeness,"  God responded.
"You can't do that Sir," cried the angel.  "How will man survive?"

The Lord studied the angel thoughtfully before He answered.
"Every once in a while a little soul is born and for one reason or another, the birth mother cannot care for her.  I needed a stand-in female."

"I think you're going to an awful lot of trouble for just a stand-in," the angel said, shaking his head in bewilderment.  "Have you taken a good look at this one?  You still gave her loving arms to rock a child to sleep and gentle hands to wipe tears from crying eyes.  Plus, I see incredible strength and courage in her face."

"Humm,"  God muttered, listening to the angel.

"And one more thought.  I realize you give all the females giant hearts and fill them full of love, but you made this female's heart even bigger.  Why?"   the angel asked.

Stroking his chin, God answered.
"Because this female must be able to love a child from the body of another.
That takes a heart with a little something extra."

"You know, Lord, I hate to criticize, but all you did was create another mother."

"I know,"  God said.  "I know."

~C.B. Roe - April 2010

This writing was an incredible gift I received soon after we returned home.  A dear friend wrote it and it is a cherished part of my journey into adoption.  The day my daughter was handed to me, God was the one who placed this child in my arms.  I'm sure of it because if there was another being in that crowed hotel lobby, it was Him.

July 21, 2005

Today marks a very special point in our adoption. Three years ago today we were driving home from Southern California after spending the weekend with our best friends and celebrating their twins 1st birthday. Somewhere on interstate 5 we made the final decision to adopt.

I can remember screaming in the car when Mike said, "Let's do it." I remember feeling like the world was my best friend and it was working for me in such a positive way. I remember that the drive from that point on was SO LONG, I wanted so badly to get home and call every person I knew and check out all the agencies who worked with international adoption. I was so excited.

That weekend was bittersweet for me. The twins birthday celebration was wonderful. Spending time with my best friend was perfect. Being "home" was just what I needed. And of course holding two squirly one year olds was great for my baby desires, and it was the same for Mike as well. But the hard part of the weekend was finding out that my exhole and his wife were officially pregnant. No announcement had been made, but my bf (my ex's cousin) told me and wanted to make sure I was prepared for it when I got home and heard the news. I had to be excited for Jacob because he was going to be a big brother. Jacob was in HI at the time with his dad and family, celebrating.

To help keep my mind off the upcoming pregnancy and the excitement from my son, all of us went to Dland to be kids again. While there, Mike and I talked more about wanting kids, okay I mean I talked about wanting kids. Mike was still unsure at the time or probably was just processing how he was going to say "lets do it" to me on the way home 2 days later. We had passed the Build @ Bear place and I begged to go inside and spend the godawful amount to get one. I walked in wanting comfort.

I walked out with this little snuggly bear.

The during the ride home the bear was in my lap the whole time. I kept dreaming of making one for a baby I may never have. All during the beginning of the ride the topic of adoption was passed back and forth. Until finally "let's do it" came out. In the matter of minutes our bittersweet weekend had turned into a searing memory in our hearts. A moment of joy to last us until the end of this journey. In the three years since that day, we look back on it every year and remind ourselves of joy we felt in making that final decision. Let's do it.

That bear has been in our bed every night since then. Three years. Once we made the "lets do it" decision we said that as soon as we got a referral we would send that bear to our baby so he or she would know our scent before we were able to be united in person. Every night when I get in bed I say a prayer for the baby that we haven't yet met and I look at that bear for comfort through the night.

Someday the bear that has gotten us through this roller coaster of a ride, will be in the arms of a child that is so loved and so wanted already. Just maybe that bear will be his or her comfort in the night as it has been for us. Until then we will continue down our path, continue to pray and continue to look to that bear for the joy that is at the end of this journey.

And always continue to remember what a special day July 21st is to us.

Testing Our Faith

Today at 5:30pm we received some (and I had to find the right word to put here and Mike and I came up with...) disappointing news from our agency. It is interesting that the information was sent to us in an email, on a Friday night. We now get to sit in wonder for the weekend with our hearts pulled and our stomaches in our throats.

This road has been so bumpy and we have kept the faith and this weekend we will really need to dig deep to let go and let God. In keeping with the faith we all decided to have some Chinese food for dinner tonight and share our thoughts, feelings and vent to eachother, including Jake. Well as you all know Chinese food comes with the best dessert and tonight under saddened skies we were not disappointed with the words that spilled out of the cookie.

Is someone really watching out for us?

The little flutter of dreams

We recently received the new PBarn catalog in the mail and lately I've just tossed them in the trash without even a glance. But for some reason I opened it. I also recently opened the nursery again. The hallway was so dark and sad so I opened the door reluctantly one day and have left it open ever since. The brightness and joy seeping out of the doorway is so intoxicating I wanted to go in and sit in the rocking chair and cry. I didn't though and I still just pass by the room and look the other way when passing by.

But when I sat down and looked into that catalog, I felt a little flutter in my belly. I immediately squelched the feeling and told myself to move on, don't get excited, don't start to dream again, leave it and continue to move forward. But moving forward is hard, it takes energy and a state of mind that I'm not sure I have at the moment. I want so badly to walk in that room and pick up where I left off. Hang pictures. Finish the changing table. Wash more clothes and sit and fold them all the while smelling and touching their little threads. I want to open the window and scream from the top of my lungs that I am having a baby!

But I can't.

The more the door stays open I am reminded of what is really happening here. We are waiting for the next chapter in our lives to begin. And while we wait the rest of the world is moving ahead. I feel as though I am standing at the subway in the middle of rush hour watching the thousands of people pass me by, going on with their daily chores. There may be an answer to my riddle here though. Take down the nursery and put it in storage, again. It has almost been a year since we pulled everything out of storage a second time thinking we would be a completed family by now. In a year we haven't seen much change only the change of our hearts becoming numb with wanting. So I think to myself, would I then be able to move forward if the nursery was just an empty room, void of life. The closet empty of lace and satin. Would I? I don't know. I just don't know.

For now I have disappointment in my heart, that flutter is such a hard feeling to make go away.

When will this end?

We got the call!!!

OMG I can't believe I'm writing this! We are so excited to share with you the referral of our newest dogter.

Name: Summitt (not sure of her middle name yet)
Birthdate: April 27, 2007 My grandmother's birthday! She's just 14 months old!!!
Foster home: Lockwood CA

She has beautiful black and white hair and lots of freckles! Her foster mother says: "She is the sweetest thing ever and loves to cuddle. She has a wonderful disposition and is happy playing with her foster sisters and brothers. She will be a wonderful addition to your family, you are so lucky."

No pictures as of yet, as soon as we get one I'll post it.

Our travel approval came today as well!!! We leave approx. 11am on Wednesday June 11th and are due to return home the same day, around 6pm!

Okay....I hope you all know what is going on! hehe! Here's the back story....

We started thinking about adopting a rescue a while back but we just weren't sure when we would do it and we definitely didn't think we would be ready so soon after loosing Molly. Since Ella has been so lonely and sad, we knew we would need to do this sooner than later, so a little over a week ago we filled out an application with a rescue agency and waited. We were told to expect a week wait until we got our first phone interview. Let me tell you all that filling out the application was JUST LIKE putting together a dossier. We were told to expect phone interviews, a home study and to have references. OMG!

Well after waiting 8 days we got our phone interview last night at 8:30 and it lasted about an hour and were then told we would be matched in the next few months. FEW MONTHS!! Hell we can wait a few months we thought, gee we've waited almost 27 for lil-J! Well, we were checking out the "waiting dog" list this afternoon and decided to request information on a little boy 400 miles away. We went to email the foster family when we saw an email from someone regarding a little girl named Summitt.

It was a sign.

We immediately called the foster mom only to find out that this situation was not normal and this NEVER happens this fast but that the agency and she felt this was a perfect match. TEARS! Summitt hasn't even been posted on the "waiting" list yet. After talking with her foster mom, it sounds as though this is the perfect match and HELLO, today is referral day for the China referrals! FREAKY!!!

SO sight unseen we are bringing home our girl on Wednesday as long as all goes well. It feels so strange to be making this choice so soon after our recent loss, but yet it seems like Molly is playing a part in this as well. Summitt is currently in foster care approx. 50 miles from Big Sur. Tears. We can't wait to take Summitt with us to scatter Molly's ashes in the fall.

We also want to say a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to the families who are seeing their daughters faces for the first time today. We celebrate with you!

Still on the path

Today marks our 26th month of waiting for our child. Well 26 months of waiting since we officially became "pregnant" with a child from China. Never in our minds did we ever think we'd be here today, May 29, 2008 and still be without. But in the last 26 months so much has changed, good change and maybe some bad, but mostly positive steps forward in our lives. The biggest step for me has been patience, with any adoption you learn patience. I've never been one to be patient. But now I am, it's calming. When I was told, "...adoption is not for the faint of heart.", I found that slightly hard to believe, but now...yeah, your heart must be as strong as steel.

We started this adoption thinking it was our plan A, and if a plan B came along we'd look into it. Recently a plan B did come along and the excitement was palpable. The emotions were exaggerated. The heart was not like steel. When plan B was taken away rather suddenly, the covers slipped away. The silence was so loud. And the heart was broken. Several weeks passed before I realized that this "plan B" that came along really wasn't plan B, but plan A. Our adoption journey to our child in China IS our plan B. Our child is not coming from somewhere or someone else, our child is coming from China. Always has been, always will be.

So as we celebrate our 26th month of this journey, I am reminded of what I've learned, patience. And I will wait until our child is in our arms. Forever.
